About the product

Tübingen's narrow old-town streets gather beside the Neckar, while university districts spread onto higher ground. Hohentübingen Castle, the Neue Aula and Botanical Garden reveal this changing landscape in a wooden city map. Southern railway neighbourhoods and routes towards Lustnau broaden the view beyond the familiar riverside scene, bringing valley spaces, dense street patterns and open academic grounds into one urban portrait.

City guide

Tübingen: A university city across river and hills

Founded in 1477, Tübingen's university shaped much more than a collection of academic buildings. Different stages of its development occupy the old town, valley and northern hills. Reading these areas alongside southern neighbourhoods and eastern transport routes reveals a city whose form is inseparable from learning, water and terrain.

The old town and its slope

Tübingen's historic centre has a close relationship with the Neckar and the rising ground above it. Hohentübingen Castle occupies an elevated position, while streets below divide the town into much smaller spaces. The collegiate church and Hölderlin Tower contribute to the familiar image, but buildings alone do not explain its character. Their relationship with lanes, riverbanks and changes in height is just as important. Short distances can involve substantial shifts in setting. The terrain gives the old town a distinct orientation, rather than allowing an even pattern of development in every direction.

Learning embedded in the city

The university's foundation in 1477 permanently linked Tübingen with teaching and research. Its history can be followed across the urban landscape, rather than confined to one founding site. The Neue Aula stands north of the older centre and points towards the expansion of academic functions. Connections between university buildings pass through ordinary neighbourhoods, placing housing and public institutions alongside places of study. This is why the university should be understood as part of the city's spatial organisation as well as its history. It helps explain movement between districts and the variety of activities accommodated within them.

From riverside space to northern gardens

The Neckar island creates an open setting immediately beside the compact old town. The Botanical Garden farther north represents a different scale of academic landscape. Comparing the two helps make Tübingen's extent tangible. A central green space beside the river has a different relationship with its surroundings from a scientific garden on higher ground. Residential streets and university areas occupy the intervening space. Together they form a wider urban sequence than the well-known waterfront view suggests. Changes in terrain add further variety, turning apparently simple connections into a series of different approaches and settings.

Beyond the postcard view

Derendingen station in the south demonstrates how far the connected city reaches beyond its historic centre. Lustnau station provides another reference to the east. Railway lines and larger roads establish an additional pattern alongside the old town's smaller lanes. Both deserve attention in a wider portrait. The centre offers a particularly concentrated historical landscape, while surrounding districts show how present-day functions are distributed across a larger area. The most revealing contrast is between the compact core, more open valley spaces and northern hills. It explains how Tübingen can feel both intimate and extensive, and why the university's influence remains visible well outside the famous old-town streets. Exploring these transitions adds a wider sense of place to the individual landmarks.
