Viersen.Three centres and their connections
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled walnut – two layers with a black back plate and frame.
About the product
Several historic centres give Viersen its distinctive shape. Alt-Viersen, Dülken and Süchteln retain different street patterns, with Beberich extending the urban picture southwards. Built and open ground link the neighbourhoods in this wooden interpretation of Viersen. Their arrangement reflects a modern municipality assembled from formerly separate places, each contributing its own structure to the wider city.

Viersen: Three centres and their connections
Viersen's present municipal identity dates from a merger in 1970, but its centres have much older histories. Dülken and Süchteln developed as fortified towns, whereas Viersen grew from a more dispersed settlement pattern. Those contrasting origins remain useful for understanding the city's several centres and the spaces connecting them.
Municipal unity, several urban centres
Viersen cannot be explained as one old town surrounded by evenly expanding suburbs. The present municipality was formed in 1970 from Viersen, Dülken, Süchteln and Boisheim. Administrative union did not replace the older settlement patterns. Each place retained its own geographical focus, making their relationships essential to understanding the larger city.
Dülken and Süchteln had developed as fortified medieval towns. Historical Viersen followed a more dispersed path, growing from settlement groups known as Honschaften. Later development connected and intensified those separate elements. These origins help explain why street patterns differ between districts, even where the built areas have moved closer together over time.
Western and northern centres
St Cornelius provides a strong reference point within Dülken to the west. The surrounding streets belong to an established town centre, rather than an extension planned outwards from Alt-Viersen. The church is therefore useful as an orientation point, but the larger significance lies in the independent urban structure around it.
Süchteln stands farther north. Its compact centre likewise reflects a history of its own. Connections towards the southern districts pass through areas of different density. Open ground between settlements is an important part of this arrangement. It records the separation of places that developed independently before they became parts of the same municipality.
Extending the picture southwards
Alt-Viersen forms the eastern focus of this urban group. Beberich, to its south, adds a residential dimension beyond the older central areas. The modern city's functioning depends on these neighbourhoods and their connections as well as on its historic centres. Their inclusion makes the broader settlement pattern easier to understand.
Across these areas, compact streets alternate with larger plots and intervening open land. The resulting structure has several centres of gravity. It is neither a continuous historic core nor a random scattering of unrelated settlements. Its coherence comes from the connections between places with distinct origins.
This makes Viersen an instructive example of how municipal history remains visible in geography. Dülken, Süchteln and Alt-Viersen continue to provide separate points of orientation within one city. Beberich extends that relationship towards the south. Reading them together gives equal weight to inherited centres and the later residential links that now hold the city together.
