About the product

Wernigerode's shape follows the valley and the rising ground beside the Harz. Hasserode, the old town's Rathaus, the station and the castle all fall within this landscape crop. The wide format brings their connecting streets into one town portrait. An oiled walnut upper layer sits over a black back plate, giving the cut routes depth while keeping the material's warm tone at the centre of the design.

Wernigerode along the edge of the Harz

Wernigerode's historic centre occupies only part of a town shaped by valleys and rising ground. Hasserode extends westwards, the castle stands above the eastern side, and the railway station provides a northern reference. These relationships place the familiar half-timbered streets within their wider geographical setting.

Hasserode forms a western part of Wernigerode in the Holtemme valley. From this area, the built town connects with the historic centre and continues towards the castle hill. Following that relationship helps explain Wernigerode's overall shape. The celebrated market square belongs to a wider settlement whose different parts respond to the meeting of urban ground and the Harz landscape.

The close scale of the old town

The Rathaus stands on the market square and provides one of the old town's principal landmarks. Half-timbered facades and neighbouring houses give the area its characteristic appearance. Its spatial identity depends on short streets and close relationships between buildings. Within that compact structure, the market opens a larger shared space and establishes a clear point of orientation.

The historic centre is connected to the rest of the town through its continuing streets. This relationship matters to the Rathaus as well as to the surrounding buildings. It marks a civic centre within an inhabited urban area, rather than an isolated historical scene. The close scale of the old town becomes more apparent when compared with the more open settings beyond it.

A castle shaped by later history

Wernigerode Castle occupies elevated ground east of the centre. Its present appearance owes much to nineteenth-century rebuilding in the historicist tradition. Earlier castle and residence history was incorporated into a later architectural expression. The result should therefore not be read simply as an unchanged medieval fortress. Several periods contribute to the building that defines the hill today.

Its position gives the castle a different relationship with the town from that of the Rathaus. Moving between these reference points involves a change in elevation and in the balance between buildings and landscape. The slope is part of the castle's setting. The raised complex and the lower streets need to be considered together to understand their geographical relationship.

Valley settlement and railway connections

To the west, Hasserode introduces a more elongated settlement pattern. The Holtemme valley helps explain its direction and its connection with the central town. The Harzquerbahn also belongs to this valley setting. Wernigerode's relationship with the mountains is therefore expressed through routes and inhabited districts, as well as through the prominent castle above the old centre.

The station north of the old town adds another approach. Its railway connection differs from the western valley route and gives the town a further point of orientation. Between station, Rathaus, castle and Hasserode, Wernigerode's varied scales become legible: compact civic centre, elevated residence, extended valley neighbourhood and transport ground meet along the edge of the Harz.
