Würzburg.City overview
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled beech – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
The Main runs between Würzburg’s most prominent historic settings: Marienberg Fortress on the western height and the Residence east of the inner city. Bridges connect the banks and their closely built central streets. Zellerau extends the urban landscape westwards, while Sanderau follows the river to the south. Together, these places turn the familiar panorama into a broader city of neighbourhoods, slopes and changing street patterns. The former centres of princely power remain strong reference points, but the surrounding residential districts reveal how Würzburg developed beyond them. Its distinctive character comes from the interaction of river, rising ground, formal architecture and the continuous everyday city along both banks.

Würzburg across the Main, from fortress to residence
The Main and the heights beside it give Würzburg a clear geographical structure. Fortress and Residence express different periods of princely representation, while Zellerau and Sanderau broaden the picture into a lived-in city. Their relationship reveals how historic landmarks and later neighbourhoods share, and respond differently to, the same river landscape.
Power expressed in two different settings
Marienberg Fortress rises west of the Main above Würzburg. Its position combines defence, authority and a commanding elevation. The complex was associated with the prince-bishops for centuries, and its relationship with the terrain remains central to its presence. From the lower city, it acts as a reference point above the surrounding buildings rather than as another element within their continuous street pattern.
The Residence occupies a different setting east of the inner city. This extensive Baroque palace, its garden and its approach express representation through architecture and planned open ground. The relationship with the city depends on composition and space rather than on a fortified height. Considering the two places together reveals different ways in which princely authority became visible in the urban landscape.
The Main lies between the fortress side and the eastern centre. Bridges turn the banks into connected parts of one city. The Old Main Bridge is particularly closely associated with Würzburg’s historic image. Its statues accompany a crossing that serves as both route and public place. From the river, the difference between the elevated fortress and the more closely built centre becomes immediately understandable.
The water does more than connect individual landmarks. It establishes a continuous direction through the city and helps organise neighbouring districts. Street alignments, building density and relationships with slopes change from one bank to the other. Würzburg therefore has a strong geographical structure even though its neighbourhoods belong to several distinct phases of development.
Residential districts beyond the familiar view
Zellerau extends the western urban area beyond the immediate setting of the fortress. It adds residential streets and everyday uses to the image of the historic city. Sanderau lies south of the centre along the eastern bank, revealing another direction of expansion. Both districts are important for understanding the city’s scale beyond its principal squares and ceremonial buildings.
Across the area between these neighbourhoods, the Residence and Marienberg, the size and character of spaces change repeatedly. Palace grounds and elevated fortifications coexist with continuous streets and residential blocks. Würzburg consequently emerges as an inhabited river landscape as well as a place of exceptional architecture. The Main provides the shared direction; the slopes and the development of individual neighbourhoods give each side its own form. Those relationships add depth to the familiar image of the Franconian residence city.
