About the product

Zagreb changes scale between its elevated historic centre and expansive southern districts. The cathedral, main station and Museum of Contemporary Art trace different phases of urban development. This wooden city map also reaches east to Maksimir Park. Dense streets, regular blocks and substantial open spaces combine in a wider view of the Croatian capital beyond its best-known central squares.

City guide

Zagreb: Hilltop origins and a city growing south

Zagreb can be read as a sequence of urban settings: older hilltop centres, a planned lower town and later southern expansion. Parks and public institutions add another organising pattern. Bringing these areas together reveals how the capital changed in scale over time while retaining recognisable connections between its different periods of growth.

Older centres on higher ground

Zagreb's historical centres occupy higher ground than the later Lower Town. Their different origins remain important to understanding the city. The cathedral and Lotrščak Tower provide two references within this older setting, where routes follow a different logic from the straighter streets to the south. Moving between them makes the change tangible. A wider view also reveals how limited the historic hilltop area is compared with the present capital. These places have exceptional significance, but their physical form cannot explain the whole city or the many neighbourhoods developed beyond them.

Planning the Lower Town

The development of the Lower Town introduced another idea of urban order. More regular blocks, larger streets and public institutions complemented the older cores. The sequence of spaces known as the Green Horseshoe belongs to this process. Parks and cultural buildings were arranged as parts of a connected civic landscape. Their importance lies in the relationship between several public places rather than in one garden alone. Green space consequently provides an organising structure within the developed city, offering routes and shared settings alongside the pattern created by streets and building plots.

Railway connections and southern growth

The main station marks an important transition within the Lower Town. Its position and tracks demonstrate the role of transport in Zagreb's expansion. Farther south, the scale changes again. The Museum of Contemporary Art represents an urban setting beyond the tightest historical and nineteenth-century centre. Larger roads and more widely spaced sites belong to this younger landscape. Including it in the portrait makes clear that the capital extends beyond its celebrated central squares. The southward sequence connects different ideas about density, access and public use within one city.

A substantial eastern park

Maksimir Park extends the view eastwards, bringing a large landscape setting into the urban portrait. Its dimensions differ from the more compact public spaces of the centre. Zagreb contains both organised inner-city green sequences and broader parkland, each with distinct relationships to surrounding neighbourhoods. Together with the historic heights, railway station and southern cultural institutions, they reveal several connected phases of development. Comparing the transitions between them shows how the city retained older references while growing in new directions, without requiring every district to adopt the same pattern or scale.
