About the product

Phoenix Lake brings several periods of Hörde’s history into close contact. The castle and older town centre stand beside a water landscape created after steel production ended. Public paths and new buildings reorganise the former industrial ground, while the Emscher follows a separate course along the northern side. The change is especially clear at the western shore, where existing streets meet the open lake. This new landscape adds a layer to Hörde rather than erasing the place that came before it. Castle, neighbourhood and waterfront together reveal how an area once organised around production became an accessible part of everyday urban life.

Hörde and the making of Phoenix Lake

Phoenix Lake may feel like a natural centre of Hörde, but it is a recent addition to the district. Its water, paths and new building plots occupy former steelworks land. The nearby castle and established town centre give this transformed landscape an older point of reference and connect it with a continuing neighbourhood.

An industrial site changes its shape

Phoenix Lake occupies the grounds of a former steelworks. Its opening in 2011 marked a fundamental change in the use of a substantial urban area. Production facilities were replaced by water, public routes and new development plots. The transformation altered who could enter the space and how people could move through it, as well as what the landscape looked like.

The lake’s size still gives some impression of the extensive industrial property that preceded it. Within a built-up district, it creates an unusually broad opening. Opposite shores can be seen together while remaining separated by water. This establishes new relationships between surrounding neighbourhoods that had previously faced the different boundaries and access arrangements of a working industrial site. The open view is therefore part of the redevelopment’s significance.

The older centre at the western shore

Hörde Castle stands near the western end, close to the established centre. Its history reaches back much further than the steelworks, recalling a settlement with its own identity before large-scale industry reshaped the area. The castle gives the new waterfront a historical reference that was already present. It helps connect the lake to the longer story of Hörde.

Between the older streets and the water, the scale changes noticeably. A close urban fabric gives way to broader public areas, and existing buildings encounter newer development. This transition matters because the lake is not a detached leisure destination outside the city. It occupies ground directly beside an established neighbourhood, where older patterns of everyday life meet the opportunities and consequences of redevelopment.

A river beside a lake

The Emscher runs in its own channel along the northern side. It does not simply flow through the larger body of water. Keeping these features separate is essential to understanding the designed landscape. The elongated lake and narrower river corridor create different kinds of edge and perform different roles within the reorganised site.

Paths around the shore offer several ways to appreciate those relationships. From the west, the castle and older centre are prominent reference points. Along the longer sides, the extent of the former industrial land becomes clearer. New residential buildings add another layer around the public spaces. Hörde thus presents a specific example of urban change: an older settlement, an industrial past and a new waterside environment remain visible together, each helping explain the others.
