Lübeck.
Layered wooden city map in oiled oak, portrait format.
About the product
Lübeck's old town island sits within a wider landscape of neighbourhoods, waterways and connecting routes. Holstentor and Burgtor remain familiar landmarks, while the station, Drägerpark and university district extend the view beyond the historic centre. The composition recalls arrivals, crossings between districts and the closeness of open waterfronts to dense streets. Portrait format shows the old town island in relation to its surrounding districts. Oak and a backing panel add depth to the cut street network, with waterways tracing the boundaries that crossings bring together.

Lübeck beyond the old town island
Lübeck's old town island is its best-known centre, but the station, eastern waterfront neighbourhoods and southern university district broaden the picture. Water helps organise these relationships. A citywide perspective connects the medieval trading centre with later expansion and shows how crossings unite places with very different functions and histories.
An island within the city
Lübeck's old town occupies a clearly defined island setting. Waterways give the historic centre distinct edges and make its entrances particularly useful for orientation. Holstentor in the west and Burgtor in the north represent different approaches to the city. Their importance also belongs to Lübeck's development as a trading centre with connections extending far beyond its immediate surroundings.
UNESCO recognises the historic urban structure, including merchants' houses, churches, public buildings and warehouses. That broader relationship matters more than an image of an entirely untouched past. Wartime destruction and reconstruction are also part of Lübeck's history. The island nevertheless remains a recognisable concentration within the larger city.
Arriving from the west
The main station stands west of the old town. Its present building opened in 1908, replacing earlier facilities that could no longer accommodate growing traffic adequately. This relocation established a substantial arrival point outside the island. Routes towards Holstentor connect railway passengers with the historic centre.
The distance between station and island is revealing. Railway infrastructure required space that was difficult to provide within the older city. Tracks and station grounds consequently operate at a different scale from the close network of old town streets. Modern transport expanded Lübeck without reproducing the arrangement of its medieval centre.
Waterfront landscapes and a university district
Drägerpark provides a landscape reference on the eastern side. It demonstrates that Lübeck's relationship with water extends beyond the trading and harbour associations of the Trave. Open banks and parkland serve different purposes from the densely built island. Moving between these settings is an important part of the city's spatial character.
To the south, the university district introduces a strong connection with medicine, science and technology. Its larger facilities belong to a later stage of urban development. Where the historic centre makes the trading past especially visible, this area points towards research, education and contemporary working life.
For someone arriving at the main station, the old town initially lies across the water. Around the university farther south, larger sites and routes away from the medieval centre establish another geography. The island therefore has different roles: it is the destination of an arrival, yet also one part of a city whose other daily journeys need not pass through it. This wider Lübeck extends beyond the familiar island image while retaining its importance for trade, historical memory and civic identity.
